I'm in Transition Year at the moment. In my school, 'TY' is practically synonymous with 'Junk Kouture', a competition held across Ireland to encourage teens like myself to be creative, fashion-savvy, and most importantly, eco-friendly. The competition requires a team to put together an outfit fit for the finest of FWs, except there's a catch: The outfit must be made from rubbish. It's an interesting task, isn't it?
I was in a team with Emma and Caoilfhionn, both of whom are phenomenal when it comes to all things arts and crafts. On day one when we all sat down together to brainstorm for our piece, I had never felt so excited to work with such creative and enthusiastic people! We had so many interesting resources and ideas, and we all fed from eacho others' drive to do well in the competition.
We started off with a lot of inspiration coming from designers like Dolce and Gabanna and Givenchy: We wanted to have a very intricate, detailed and luxurious looking outfit to make it look like I'd stepped out of some sort of fantasy world... Combined with the bronzey, golden and dark colours we used, we decided I was going to be some sort of Bronze Age goddess character.
As for craftsmanship, we certainly had our work cut out for us: The corset is decorated with individually plaited strips of bin-bags and twisted copper wires, all placed in swirling patterns all over. The skirt was knitted from video tape, and took several months to complete. Our headpiece is also made from wire... This is what we have done so far, and I fear that we may not even be finished the outfit completely!
|Me and my posse..|
We've made it to the Southern regional finals so far, which will be held on the 14th of March this year. We're incredibly happy with this result, however we're hoping to get further! So, we need your help..
Starting today, (24th February), a vote is open to the public to decide who they want to see in the finals this year. It would mean the world to me (and my team) if you could vote for us *here*! We are in the Southern category, and you can find our outfit 'Garbage Goddess' on the second page of this category. Each person has one vote per day.Voting closes on the 29th, meaning that each person has five entries into the competition in total! THANKS EVERYONE!
